SCI Albion State Prison
SCI Albion is a Pennsylvania Department of Corrections medium-security male state correctional institution at 10745 Route 18 in Albion. It is physically located in Erie County, but it is not an Erie County jail and does not hold the ordinary local pretrial population from fresh arrests. The facility houses people assigned by PA DOC after sentencing, reception, and classification.
PA DOC's SCI Albion source gives details that are specific to this prison: 56 acres inside the perimeter, 290 acres outside the perimeter, 25 operational structures, 10 housing units, and an average of 605 employees. It also identifies SCI Albion as a regional training facility. Those facts place SCI Albion in the state prison system rather than the county jail system, and they affect every lookup, visit, mail, phone, and money instruction for the facility.
The official facility source for SCI Albion is captured from PA DOC's SCI Albion page.

SCI Albion Population
The PA DOC Monthly Population Report is the correct population source for SCI Albion. The report dated May 31, 2026 lists Albion with a DOC population of 1,889, a capacity of 2,303, and occupancy of 82.0 percent. It also gives physically present categories inside the institution, which help show how the count is distributed across general population, special needs, therapeutic community, disciplinary custody, administrative custody, and infirmary status.
One month earlier, the report listed Albion at 1,880, and one year earlier it listed 1,866. The one-year change was 23 people, or 1.2 percent. That small increase belongs to the state prison count and should not be blended with Erie County Prison's 2023 Vera jail population, because the two systems count different custody groups.
| SCI Albion category | Population | Source |
|---|---|---|
| General population | 1,551 | PA DOC monthly report, May 31, 2026 |
| Administrative custody | 20 | PA DOC monthly report |
| Disciplinary custody | 63 | PA DOC monthly report |
| Therapeutic community | 50 | PA DOC monthly report |

| Infirmary | 15 | PA DOC monthly report |
Search SCI Albion Inmates
Use the PA DOC Inmate and Parolee Locator to search SCI Albion custody. PA DOC says the locator covers state-sentenced inmates and parolees, updates daily, and does not include people incarcerated in county facilities. That distinction is important in Erie County because Erie County Prison uses phone verification, while SCI Albion uses the state locator.
- Open the PA DOC inmate and parolee locator service or the direct search portal.
- Search by last name or inmate number. PA DOC identifies one of those fields as the key starting point.
- Add first name if needed to narrow common last names.
- Check the facility field or status details to confirm the person is assigned to SCI Albion.
- If the person is still in county jail after arrest, contact Erie County Prison instead of relying on the DOC locator.
| Field label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last name | Text | Either last name or inmate number | Best first step when the DOC number is not known. |
| Inmate number | Text | Either inmate number or last name | Best exact search when available. |
| First name | Text | No | Helpful for common names. |
| Buttons | Search controls | n/a | Use the portal controls to submit or reset the search. |
SCI Albion Address
The facility phone and address come from PA DOC, not from Erie County Corrections. Contacting the prison may help with facility procedures, but inmate location should still be checked through the DOC locator because transfers can occur and DOC does not discuss transfers before they take place.

SCI Albion Visitation
SCI Albion visitation follows PA DOC state prison rules, not Erie County Prison's pod schedule. State prison visits generally require the visitor to follow DOC approval and scheduling rules, present acceptable identification, comply with dress and conduct rules, and use the DOC visitation system. The county jail's Ash Street visiting schedule, cellphone ban, and inmate pod list are not the right rules for SCI Albion.
| Visitation item | SCI Albion rule path | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduling | Use PA DOC visitation procedures and the Inmate Visitation System. | PA DOC visitation |
| Approval | Follow DOC visitor approval rules before planning a trip. | PA DOC visitation policy source |
| Facility schedule | Confirm current SCI Albion visiting days and any unit limits with DOC. | SCI Albion / PA DOC |
| County jail schedule | Does not apply to SCI Albion state prison custody. | Facility type distinction |
Because PA DOC can change prison schedules for security, staffing, weather, or health reasons, visitors should verify the current SCI Albion visit status before travel.
SCI Albion Mail and Money
SCI Albion uses PA DOC's state systems for mail, money, and phone service. PA DOC's FAQ says state inmate money goes through JPay and cannot be anonymous. Phone accounts use Securus, and the recipient must be added to the inmate's telephone list. State prison mail uses the centralized Smart Communications/PADOC address, which is separate from Erie County Prison's Smart Communications address.
| Service | Provider / detail |
|---|---|
| State prison mail | Smart Communications/PADOC, Inmate Name/Inmate Number, Institution, PO Box 33028, St Petersburg, FL 33733 |
| Money deposits | JPay, with no anonymous deposits under PA DOC FAQ guidance |
| Phone accounts | Securus account, with the recipient added to the inmate's telephone list |
| County jail vendors | JailATM, Oasis, and SmartJailMail county rules do not control SCI Albion |
SCI Albion Admission
SCI Albion does not process street arrests the way Erie County Prison does. PA DOC's FAQ says male inmates entering DOC are processed through the diagnostic and classification center at SCI Camp Hill, while female inmates are processed through SCI Muncy. Classification can take weeks to months and evaluates security level, health care needs, psychological needs, treatment needs, and other placement factors. After that process, DOC assigns a home facility.
A person arrested in Erie County who is waiting for bail, first appearance, or local case action should be checked through Erie County Prison. A person sentenced to state custody may later appear in the DOC locator and may be assigned to SCI Albion or another DOC institution based on classification. Transfers are part of the state system, and DOC officials do not discuss transfers before they happen.

SCI Albion Programs
SCI Albion has far more program detail in the research than the county jail pages. PA DOC lists a Pennsylvania Correctional Industries commissary distribution center that employs more than 80 inmates and serves seven assigned prisons. The facility also has a Community Work Program, a Reentry Service Office for people within 18 months of minimum or release dates, life skills and budgeting work, digital literacy, and computer lab support for resumes and job searches.
Education and treatment options include 30 academic areas with GED and Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma work, vocational custodial maintenance, warehouse and material handling, cosmetology, therapeutic community, NRTU, Residential Treatment Unit, Special Needs Unit, and several voluntary or mandatory programs. The official history says SCI Albion was one of five prototypical state prisons dedicated in 1993, became ACA accredited in 1996, and has been reaccredited every three years since.
Recent official context is also state-level. The research notes a June 9, 2026 PA DOC job fair item for SCI Albion, which points to ongoing recruitment activity at the institution. Prior PA DOC death notices for Albion referenced Pennsylvania State Police notification and Erie County Coroner cause-of-death review, but those items are state prison conditions records, not Erie County jail records.
Note: Confirm facility assignment, visit approval, and current mail rules through PA DOC before sending funds or traveling.
